Internships - Servant Partners Domestic Internships

Nov 8, 2017

Internship alumni call it “a crash course in following Jesus with the rest of your life.”

Let's flesh that out a bit.  In many ways, the Servant Partners Internship parallels the time the disciples spent with Jesus.  They were young adults, just setting out in life, and they got to spend three years with Jesus as their rabbi.  Those years set the trajectory for the rest of their adult lives, giving them a model to follow and a vision to chase.  Our internship can play a similar role.

"Those years set the trajectory for the rest of their adult lives, giving them a model to follow and a vision to chase."

Like the disciples, our interns practice ministry.  For example, in San José, interns arrive with big desires to serve their neighbors and to bless the world, but come with little experience or connections to help them do that well.  They struggle to meet people and figure out what they have to offer.  But eventually, each intern finds their niche.  Their ministry begins to have substance, and they gain valuable experience, refining their gifts for use throughout their lives.

Like the disciples, our interns live in close community, sharing in both successes and struggles.  As part of their bivocational ministry, some interns find jobs quickly and some take many months. Often, interns learn about radical community and generosity, even when it comes to finances.  Such sharing tells a powerful story in our greedy world and helps interns to develop counter-cultural disciplines.

And like the disciples, our interns learn from Jesus.  We devote significant time together to studying scripture—Luke in the first year and Acts in the second—so that we view our experience through the lens of the gospel and the early church.  Reflecting on scripture and applying it in our lives sets our ministry agenda and corrects our mistakes.

When Andy graduated from college, he intentionally moved into a marginalized neighborhood and tried to do urban ministry on his own.  He was deeply inspired by an InterVarsity urban program and an Urbana missions conference, but he had little idea of what he was doing.  Andy floundered for two discouraging years before finding some help and traction.  Now, as a Servant Partners staff working closely with interns, Andy is committed to helping young adults begin their post-college ministry in a well-resourced and guided way.

If you’re interested in starting your career the way the disciples did, apply for this crash course in following Jesus with the rest of your life.
